About Coda Piano School

Personalized piano lessons in Virginia Beach.

The next chapter of a trusted teaching tradition.

Coda Piano School grew from the work of Uma, a dedicated pianist and specialized piano instructor in Virginia Beach, VA. For many years, families in Hampton Roads have trusted Uma for thoughtful, structured, and highly personalized piano instruction.

Today, Coda Piano School is the next chapter of that journey.

While Uma continues to teach, the school has grown into a dedicated piano studio with a team of carefully selected, talented teachers who share the same high standards, attention to detail, and commitment to student progress. Every teacher at Coda Piano School is chosen not only for musical ability, but also for patience, professionalism, and the ability to guide students in a clear and encouraging way.

At Coda Piano School, students receive more than casual music lessons. We believe piano study should build a strong foundation in technique, reading, rhythm, theory, musical expression, and performance confidence. Whether a child is playing their very first notes, an older student is preparing for more advanced repertoire, or an adult is returning to music after many years, we shape the learning process around the student's individual needs and goals.

One of the most important parts of our school is consistency. Uma personally guides the teaching approach at Coda Piano School and keeps a close eye on student progress. Our teachers work with a shared standard, and students are not simply placed in lessons and forgotten. Progress is monitored, goals are discussed, and instruction is adjusted when needed so each student continues moving forward.

Families who trusted Uma as a teacher can feel confident trusting Coda Piano School. The teachers at our school are teachers Uma trusts. They follow the same values that built her reputation: serious instruction, kindness, patience, musical discipline, and genuine care for each student.

Our goal is to help students become confident, capable musicians, not just students who can play a few songs. We want them to understand music, develop healthy technique, perform with confidence, and enjoy the process of learning.

Coda Piano School offers private piano lessons and group classes in a professional studio environment with acoustic pianos, structured curriculum, and regular recital opportunities. We welcome beginners, intermediate students, advanced students, and adults who want to study piano in a focused and supportive setting.

Whether your child is just beginning, your family is looking for a serious long-term music education, or you are returning to piano yourself, Coda Piano School is here to help you take the next step.

A serious place to learn, with a supportive approach.

Choosing the right piano teacher matters. At Coda Piano School, students receive structured, individualized instruction that supports their goals, whether they are beginning piano for the first time, returning to music as an adult, preparing for college music studies, or working toward advanced performance skills.

Every student learns differently, so lessons are tailored to the student?s age, level, learning style, and musical interests. Our goal is to help each student build technique, reading skills, theory knowledge, musical expression, and confidence in a way that feels clear, organized, and achievable.

Piano instruction for many ages, levels, and goals.

Our Virginia Beach piano studio serves a diverse group of students with different backgrounds, schedules, and musical ambitions. We teach children, teens, adults, college students, brand-new beginners, intermediate students, and advanced pianists who need focused repertoire and technical growth.

Younger students build healthy technique, note reading, rhythm, practice habits, confidence, and recital preparation through weekly piano lessons. Adult learners and college students can study piano for personal enrichment, music coursework, auditions, or long-term musical development.

Weekly private lessons with room to grow.

Most students attend one private piano lesson each week. A common lesson length is 30 minutes, which works well for many beginners and general music students. Students who need more time for technique, theory, repertoire, or performance preparation may choose 60-minute lessons.

For students pursuing serious classical study, auditions, competitions, or a professional path in music, more frequent lessons may be recommended. Advanced study requires consistent practice at home and a deeper commitment to repertoire, technique, ear training, and musicianship.

Students learn more than songs.

Students are encouraged to build a balanced yearly repertoire. A typical goal is to learn at least five pieces per year, including music from contrasting style periods such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary music.

Technical work is also an important part of our piano lessons. Depending on the student?s level, lessons may include scales, arpeggios, etudes, hand position, coordination, tone production, rhythm, sight reading, and practice strategies.

Progress comes from desire, discipline, and the right guidance.

We believe many students can learn to play piano well when they have patient instruction, clear expectations, and consistent practice. Musical ability grows over time, and the skills students develop through piano lessons can support confidence, focus, creativity, and discipline for life.

Our mission is to help students become thoughtful musicians, not just people who can memorize a few songs. We want students to understand music, enjoy the learning process, and feel proud of the progress they make.
